The Oil Cleansing Method

Cleansing your skin is one of the most important steps in achieving and maintaining healthy, clear skin.

Don’t underestimate the absolute importance of this 1st step in your skin care regime. This is particularly true at night.

Makeup, sunscreen, pollution, dirt, combined with our skin’s natural oil production create the perfect environment for bacteria to grow and multiply. The skin’s pores become clogged resulting in blackheads, breakouts and premature aging. As a result, your skin texture will appear dull, rough and splotchy.

By cleansing the skin effectively, you remove the daily grime that gets trapped in your pores, gently slough off dead skin cells, refine pores and reveal smoother and more evenly toned skin.

Once your skin is cleansed, it is properly prepared for the application of other skin care products if desired. These can now be more readily absorbed by the skin rather than just sitting on top of a layer of dirt and dead skin cells.

Cleansing at night is preferred because it is at night, when we are sleeping that our skin naturally repairs and rejuvenates itself. By applying your serum and moisturiser after cleansing, you are nourishing and protecting the skin and aiding its repair while you sleep.

Personally, I choose to cleanse again in the morning but some find it sufficient to just splash with warm water and follow with their daytime regime and sunscreen with a high SPF.

So how do you cleanse using the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM)?

You will need:

warm running water

a clean soft cotton face washer or muslin cloth

a clean dry towel

and your cleansing oil

  • Onto clean hands dispense 2-4 pumps of cleansing oil and rub gently to warm the oil.
  • Massage onto dry skin for 1-2 minutes concentrating on problem areas or heavy makeup.
  • By massaging the skin you will encourage blood circulation and the breakdown of makeup and daily debris that sit on the skin and settle into pores (and it feels great too).
  • Next, take your face washer and soak it in warm water and wring out the excess.
  • Place warm face washer over entire face and leave until the cloth starts to cool. This process encourages the pores to open and release oils and impurities trapped inside.
  • Wipe face gently with face washer and repeat the process once or twice more.
  • For heavy makeup you may wish to double cleanse by repeating the whole process with more cleansing oil.
  • Gently pat the skin dry with a clean, dry towel.

Your skin should feel thoroughly cleansed, velvety soft and glowing. You should feel no oily residue, no skin tightness (tight skin means that the natural skin oils have been stripped away leaving skin dry) and pores should appear more refined.

You are now ready to apply your toner, serum and moisturiser if desired

I can confidently recommend using our Flora Maia Gentle Cleansing Oil for your daily oil cleanse. It is a blend of beautiful botanical oils, naturally rich in vitamins and omega fatty acids combined with aromatherapeutic essential oils known for their anti-bacterial and healing properties. It is made from 100% Natural Ingredients and is gentle enough to use every day. The essential oils will even relax you and help you sleep at night.

This skin loving cleanser will leave your skin thoroughly cleansed, plump and nourished. It is suitable for all skin types and helps to balance oily skin, soothe dry skin and is gentle enough for sensitive, irritated skin.

Easily remove waterproof make-up with this gentle oil and be confident that your skin will not end up feeling stripped and tight (skin that is stripped of its natural oils will feel tight and will naturally over compensate by producing more oils, hence, the never-ending cycle of dry, irritated skin followed by too much oil production). Balanced skin is healthy, radiant skin.
