Cleansing Oily and Acne Prone Skin

I get asked a lot: Is Flora Maia Gentle Cleansing Oil suitable for oily and acne prone skin? Short answer, YES!

For skin that is acne prone, the balance of the Omega Fatty Acid profile in the oils combined in our Gentle Cleansing Oil coupled with the natural antibacterial properties of essential oils is key.

The combination of vegetable oils at the percentages used means our Gentle Cleansing oil has a higher content of Linoleic Acid than Oleic Acid.

Why is that important? Linoleic Acid (omega-6) is an essential fatty acid (EFA) meaning the body can’t produce its own. It is thought that individuals with acne are deficient in Linoleic Acid. Although Oleic Acid (omega-9) has many beneficial properties for skin health (including anti-inflammatory) it can cause an overproduction of sebum in those deficient in Linoleic Acid. For this reason it is important to get the balance right.

You can read more on the importance and benefits of unsaturated fatty acids found in vegetable oils for skin health here. Furthermore, all the oils have a low comedogenic rating so they won’t clog the pores.

In addition the essential oils used in our Gentle Cleansing Oil serve their own specific purpose. Essential oils are very concentrated and contain volatile compounds with their own unique properties and fragrance. At Flora Maia we only use essential oils within safe dermal limits to minimise adverse reactions (irritation, sensitisation), blending them synergistically for their therapeutic and aromatherapy benefits.

Flora Maia Gentle Cleansing Oil contains a blend of the following essential oils:

Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) Oil: antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, regenerative.

Cymbopogon martinii (Palmarosa) Oil: antiseptic, balances sebum production, stimulates cellular regeneration.

Pelargonium roseum (Geranium) Oil: antiseptic, balances sebum production, astringent, anti-inflammatory

Matricaria recutita (Chamomile, German Blue) Oil: anti-inflammatory, wound healing, vasoconstrictor (reduces redness).

Backhousia citriodora (Lemon Myrtle) Oil: antimicrobial, emotionally uplifting.

The best way to use our Gentle Cleansing oil is using the Oil Cleansing Method.

If you’re new to this method of cleansing, please read our comprehensive guide using the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) here. This method of cleansing opens the pores and will thoroughly remove makeup, pollution and bacteria without leaving your skin stripped like some harsh foaming cleansers do. Instead you skin will feel clean, supple and balanced.

The anti-inflammatory, balancing and anti-bacterial properties of the oils help to clear up existing breakouts, prevent further infection, soothe irritation and help to reduce scarring.

Prickly Pear Seed Oil, a light and quickly absorbing oil, is perfect for oily and acne prone skin types because it is high in Linoleic Acid so it won’t exacerbate the problem. It will, however, further nourish and balance the skin, as well as help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, even skin tone, reduce hyper-pigmentation and tighten pores.
